The Realities of Owning a Used Thinkpad
2026-10-29
In 2023, I got a refurbished Thinkpad T460 for careless use during travel, which soon became my daily driver. It is the most ergonomic laptop I've ever used (except for the dim screen). I consider it highly reliable as well. However, if you are considering getting a used Thinkpad for yourself, please don't take the built-like-a-tank reputation for granted. I'm sure they are more durable in general, but that doesn't mean any given Thinkpad you get will keep working without issues. I'm noting this down in particular because almost everything you'll find online says otherwise.
Here are the issues I've faced so far (mostly after two years of intense usage):
- The top cover broke near one of the hinges. The laptop was unusable when it happened, but as rigid as new after repair (not replacement).
- The CPU fan bearings seem to have worn out. I no longer run it in high-performance mode to avoid noise and further fan damage. Replacement is possible and relatively inexpensive, if needed. (Once the fan actually got stuck and the machine wouldn't boot, but that was due to dust.)
- The charger plug (or socket) is loose and sometimes I have to dust and reconnect it multiple times. Easy to run out of power if working in an environment without a battery indicator.
- Once I kept the lid half closed for a while, and the bezel fell off. Attaching it back wasn't a big deal, though.
- During the first couple of months, I dropped my bag once with T460 inside. Unlike what most claim, there wasn't a dent on the floor. Instead, one of the battery clips broke. Now I have to be very careful whenever I remove the battery.
All said, I still consider my T460 highly reliable for a 10-year old, highly used laptop. Every issue I had was inexpensive to fix, and most importantly, it can be repaired. There is another remarkable fact -- with all the dust I expose it to, the keyboard works fine and remain better than most other membrane keyboards.
The takeaway: are used Thinkpads more reliable and value for money than most fancy laptops out there? Of course yes, in general. Is any given Thinkpad so reliable that you'll never visit a service center? No.
